URGENT - kestrel nesting sites needed for research project

Hello,

Im a postgraduate student at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, studying an MSc in Wildlife Conservation and Management. As part of my research thesis, I'm looking into the habitat selection by foraging nesting kestrels.

My main objective, is to find out how kestrels use grass margins, encouraged by Environmental Stewardship. This is mainly because kestrels are still in decline, despite many other farmland bird species increasing.

I am posting this message, to ask if anyone, anywhere within the northumberland and durham area, knows of any kestrel nest boxes or nest sites that are occupied (or have been in the past ) that i can monitor. The sites must be lowland, preferrably in an agricultural setting, although lowland areas are the key neccessity.

Clearly I will not be disturbing the birds, as I will monitor from a fixed, discrete vantage point.

I look forward to your responses!
Thanks
Giselle

But the post IS from a year ago! Not a new request. Daft thing to ask on a website, all the same.

Hi Giselle - I share David's concerns about this request. However, here are the three ports of call you should contact (assuming you haven't already - and if you already have, I wonder why this request via BirdForum).
northeast@naturalengland.org.uk
RSPB - 01767 693 690

Good luck.

Other than the obvious fact that this was Giselle's original request from 2007, I would just like to add that she was helped in her research by experienced raptor workers who had no problem with responding to her request for assistance.

cheers
martin
