attracting a wider variety of birds to my garden?

Hi all,

At the moment I'm getting loads of sparrows, greenfinches, starlings, goldfinches, wood pigeons, collard doves and black birds, smaller numbers of blue tit, great tit, dunnocks, wren and robin with the occasional siskin (winter). I've been putting out Niger, black sunflower, cheap seed mix and a variety of fat balls. I'd like to increase the variety of birds in my garden and would partucularly like to attract treecreepers, nuthatch, woodpeckers, other tits and more finches and thrushes. Is there any advice you can give me? I have tried special mixes with mealworms and fruit before but have only even seen the above come to feed. I have tried putting out peanuts but they just tend to go off as nothing seems to come for them. I have no mature trees in my garden but adjoining gardens do and I have seen G S woodpecker in the mature trees once as well as occasional Jays.

Thanks,

Jo

A block of the cheapest blandest cheddar you can find will delight woodpeckers! Just as long as it's no or very low salt it will be fine.

Hi To You,
I Have Kept Various Birds For Many Years And I Find That Sometimes Variety Of Presentation Of Food Helps. Of The Birds You Wish To Attract, The Nuthatch Is The Only One That Has Been Encouraged To My Bird Table With The Introduction Of Sunflower Hearts Which They Relish. I Also Scatter Peanuts In Thier Shells On My Lawns (only A Few At A Time) Which Attract Jays Etc. Usually They Simply Bury The Nuts For A Later Date...! I Also Found That Sewing Them Together With A Needle And Wool And Hanging Them Up From A Bird Table Or Tree Has Brought Green And Spotted Woodpeckers In. All Of The Others That You Mentioned Just Seem To Be Quite Happy With A Regular Supply Of Mixed Seed. Hope This Helps!?

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try the cheese and the peanuts. How high should I place the cheese?

Would love to get a Jay or GS pecker in my garden....alas don't think it will ever happen. Got one small tree in there but trees directly outside the garden. Never seen any woodies or jay out there though.

Hi all, I'd say it certainly depends on the type of trees you have in and around your feeding area.

got to love them Woodpeckers. I just took a dried log about 6" around and 5' tall, and placed in my flower bed. Now the woodpeckers land halfway up, and climb the rest of the way to the suet feeder i got attached. Works like a charm.

For all others, I placed a stump next to it and just throw sunflower and regular seed on it, and watch the parade.

Look at some pics on my gallery to see what I'm talking about

Looks like work is paying off. Finally had a GS woodpecker on the feeders yesterday morning. To fast for my camera but I'm well pleased!

ETA the peanuts I put out just don't seem to be getting eaten though. Think I will lay off those.
