Location: Somerset, UK. End of May 2006.

On first appearances, this seems to me to be a Tufted Duck, but after looking at pictures in various field guides I think the forehead should be much steeper and higher than it is on this individual.

Also, it has what appears to be a very faint ring around the base of its neck, but this could be a trick of the light, I suppose. In Collins Bird Guide, the ad. male is depicted with a faint neck ring. But again, the forehead is shown much higher than it is on this individual. Any ideas? A hybrid?

It looks fine for a Tufted Duck. I wouldn't say there was any hybridisation going on there.

birds can raise or lower their feather tracts and in doing so, change shape. Diving ducks will often sleek back their feathers just before a dive, giving them a completely different shape than when they're resting. It is a tufted duck.
