Ducks

Went to a children's zoo in Bridlington yesterday and saw a few interesting ducks. The ID boards were very faded though so I'm not sure what I saw. Can anyone ID these for me, more to follow.

Hi Martin,

The last one is definately a Fulvous Whistling Duck. The first looks a cross between a Mandarin and a Wood Duck to me. The middle one I'm not too sure about.

I think the first one's a full wood duck. There's another thread going on at the moment about how mandarins don't hybridise, even with closely related wood ducks.

Thanks Pete,

I think you're right, I just didn't want to put that it was if there was a chance of it being hybrid. Any ideas of the middle one?

Perhaps the middle one could be a Chestnut Teal?

I think I'd go for

1) Wood Duck -partial eclipse male
2) Chestnut Teal
3) Fulvous Whistling Duck

Cheers

Sean

PS Yes Joern says Wood Duck and Mandarin don't hybridize..in fact because of their genetic make-up Mandartin can't hybridize with any species of duck it seems.

Very interesting Sean and good to learn.

I think Pedley Birder is right about the Teal, here's another good link.

Yeah I heard about this as well. At seaworld, we even keep the two together, we have for years and neither has ever hybridized with anything else including one another. Where is that thread?

Oh yeah almost forgot, I think it's an eclipse male Wood Duck.

Thanks bitter twisted. Very interesting reading there. Always wondered why are Wood Ducks and Mandarins never hybridized even though they live in a pond together all the time.
