Hello again,

I decided to behead this guy/gal in photoshop and see if you could identify it from the head. The picture was taken in USA.

Good luck,

"The picture was taken in USA"

Hmmm . . . . methinks Michael W is being a bit devious here - we know from past threads he's done some birding in the eastern US as well as living out west . . .

And I see a hint of pinkish tone to the bill, with not much contrast in tone between the upper & lower mandibles . . .

I'm going to go for 1st winter male Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Michael

Good job guys! Spud got this one right. I have attached the whole picture for confirmation, although I wouldn't know the difference. Maybe one of you will know.

Michael Frankis, you're right in thinking that I was being devious. I hoped that it might be mixed up with the Rose-breasted Grosbeak. From the picture, I don't know if it is possible to tell the difference. Sorry...

Nope, Spud is right. Again.
RBG would have more streaking across the breast. The contrasting white throat is a bit of a worry though - I would have expected Black-headed to have a more buffy throat.

Black-Headed Grosbeak usually resides more in the western part of Canada, the US and most of Northern Mexico.
