Is this a moth?

I haven't seen a moth looking anything like this metallic black one, which has me wondering if indeed it is a moth. The trouble is, my starting point is usually Uk Moths families and quite often I can't even guesss what the family is. Can anyone suggest a better way of narrowing down the field a bit (apart from resorting to the experts on this forum of course!)?

This is a moth. Features of this family are the elongated shape, slightly raised stance at front, longish, front facing antennae. There are similar families.

One of the Coleophoras, I think, perhaps alcyonipennella, but needs the chop.

Yep. One of the longhorns (Incurvariidae: Adelinae), probably Adela reaumurella.

David G., I thought David A. wanted tips on how to get to the family rather than an ID.
