Hi George, can you tell me how you get your web images to stand out so well. I know it helps to take a great photo in the first place but do you do anything else to them to give them more visual impact.

Oops. Sorry about the wrong link. It was just that the one I gave had an unusually striking layout of bird pix and was in my history folder for yesterday. Doh!

Cheers Andy, it was well worth a look. Some superb shots of birds, butterflies, fungi and reptiles all subjects that I enjoy. I didn't realise George had a stall at the Rutland Bird Fair.

Well I eventually got here for your question, Wine Man.

The technical term is differential focussing and I can graphically demonstrate how it's done if someone can first tell me how to post images within the text of my next reply.

I need to post about 4/5 images.

Hi George,

To add up to five photo attachments per posting, first click on the green 'post reply' button, above left from the 'quick reply' box. A new page opens and enter your text in the box. Once done, scroll down to the boxes below and the third one down is titled 'Attach Files'. Click on 'Manage Attachments' and follow the instructions to browse files from your hard drive.

If you simply want to add hyperlinks to photos either in the Bird Forum Gallery or elsewhere, then still select the green 'post reply' button and above the text box on the new page there are either the IMG buttons or the Hyperlink options to add links to your photos. Either will do the job, but the new 'enhanced mode' selectable above the text box is a very easy method to use, you just hit the IMG button, paste the link and hit the IMG button again to close the tag or use the 'close current tag' button.

Thanks Ian, I have now tried that (twice) and get "page unavailable - refresh". I tried refresh but no good so any other ideas?

I understand that some members have been having problems with this feature since the upgrade.

The only other thing I can suggest is to upload the images using the hyperlink method. The images can be uploaded to our Gallery if need be and then the links copied into the forum thread, as oputlined in my second paragraph above.

I have now suceeded in attaching pictures to my postings (see today) - thank you. Now I need to know how to make them appear within my text and not just added onto the end.

Hi George,

Well done in persevering with the attachments. The only way to get photos to appear in amongst the text, at present at least, is by using the hyperlink method.

First of all upload a photo to the Gallery or even on another photo host site that allows what is sometimes called 'hot-linking', which basically means the site allows viewing of your photos without the need to log in.

Once uploaded, it will generate a hyperlink, quite often viewable by right-clicking and selecting 'properties'. Copy that link and then open a second window in your browser and navigate to Birdforum and whichever forum where you want to post your thread.

The basic html code for adding your link is (url) your link (/url) but using the square brackets instead of the round ones. Simply paste the Url between the sets of brackets. A link with slightly more finesse can be made using the name of your photo and looks like this
(url= your hyperlink)name of your photo(/url)
the link can be made to stand out by adding a change of colour
(url= your hyperlink)(color=red)name of your photo(/color)(/url)

Don't worry if this sounds a bit daunting as Bird Forum has several tools built in to make the process simpler.

You still need to have the hyperlink to hand, but on navigating to the Birdforum thread, simply select the blue globe shape with a chain link above the text box, type in the name of your photo in the box that appears at the top of the screen, hit OK and then paste in the hyperlink to the next box that appears. The hyperlink ready formatted appears in the bottom of the main text box. You can still then change it's colour of you want .

An alternative method again is to use the tag buttons to do much the same thing or the IMG buttons to easily add a link without any text. Using the IMG button simply entails hitting the IMG button pasting your link and then hitting the 'close tag' or 'close current tag' button.

It may all sound a little confusing but actually is quite easy once you have done it a few times.

Obviously text can be added above and below the hyperlinks.

It should work George, but you put a double bracket at the start of the link and there should just be one and put an extra one in after .jpg - the link works!

To answer Wine Mans question I need to have pictures within the text otherwise it will not work. The pics are in the form of transparencies that I can scan and run in Photoshop. Incidently the postings you made also did not include my picture - just a link.

Superb image George

You have the technique just right. The 'embedding' of images so that they appear in the text of a posting is disabled. What you need to do is to add your text and then post a link like this

and then carry on writing you report.

Even better if the link was foramtted like this -

Golden Eagle on Roe Deer

looks like this but with 'square' brackets -(url=http://www.georgemccarthy.com/image...on_Roe_Deer.jpg)(color=red)Golden Eagle on Roe Deer(/color)(/url)

and then carry on with the text after which more and more photos can be added.


If it was a photo uploaded to the Bird Forum Gallery then the link would take you there direct rather than waiting fo the re-direct.

This will make you splutter even more! By a really, really strange coincidence I took it in Fife, Scotland.
