Seeking advice for birding western Costa Rica on a budget

Thanks to having saved up miles on a couple of airlines, I may be able to spend just over two weeks in Costa Rica this winter, from December 18th to January 4th. I've been birding in Costa Rica before and absolutely loved it. On those trips, I birded mostly in the Arenal area in Alajuela...

    Kingfisherconbabuina.jpg

During a regular day at Tarcoles River boat tour, it's possible to find up to 5 species of King Fishers doing their thing. On this occasion, we photographed it with a local fish called Babuina. Ringed King Fisher is our most prominent species. Belted is the only migrant to our country the...

    Scarlet Macaws.jpg

It should be a law in Costa Rica to let dead trees alone (as long they don't present any kind of danger). Scarlet Macaws cherish this palm tree hole for their nesting.
  5. Female Great Curassow, Costa Rica

    Female Great Curassow, Costa Rica

Protected areas in Costa Rica are some of the easier places to see this species. Esquinas Rainforest Lodge is one of the most reliable spots in the country for Great Currasow because the lodge guards leave food for them in the garden! This was one of 5 or 6 that we saw very well.
  6. Charming Hummingbird, Costa Rica

    Charming Hummingbird, Costa Rica

The Charming Hummingbird used to known as the Beryl-crowned Hummingbird until naming authorities opted for personality over appearance. It has a small range but is pretty common in humid forest on southwestern Costa Rica. It was the most common hummingbird species at Esquinas Rainforest Lodge.

    Violet-headed Hummingbird

This male Violet-headed Hummingbird struck an arrogant looking pose at the El Copal Biological Reserve in Costa Rica.
  8. Sooty-faced Finch

    Sooty-faced Finch

These handsome little finches aren't all that rare but can be easy to miss when birding cloud forests in Costa Rica. This one surprised me by staying still enough for a photo in Tapanti National Park.
  9. Silver-throated Tanagers

    Silver-throated Tanagers

Silver-throated Tanagers are common in the middle elevation forests of Costa Rica. They will also come down to feeding tables like these two did.
  10. Female Snowcap

    Female Snowcap

This female Snowcap popped up nest to the trail at Quebrada Gonzalez and wouldn't budge from her perch. She probably had a nest nearby although I couldn't find it.
