It would seem that in some areas of Nepal, particularly those close to major tourist centres, visitors and particularly birders have been targeted by muggers in popular birding areas. Specifically there have been problems at Phulchiwki Hill on a number of occasions and the local authorities recommend (and provide on request) that you be accompanied by a couple of policemen when visiting. Also, a more recent development, there have been problems around the Peace Stupa at Pokhara and, once again, the police were recommending taking an accompanying guard.
