Ernest Chantre (1843–1924) was a French geologist, archaeologist and anthropologist in the Middle East (1890–1894). He became Assistant Director, Museum of Lyon (1871) and was and was Professor of Anthropology (1908–1924). He excavated the first Sumerian cuneiform tablets in Turkey (1892–1893).

Benoit or Benoît? How is the correct spelling?

For what it's worth, I'd go for the former version (as of/in contemporary handwriting, below):

The most common/usual spelling is Benoît, but there are certainly people who spell their given name without the accent (e.g.: Benoit Hellings — Wikipédia).
Another (infrequent) variant is Benoist (e.g.: Benoist Apparu - Wikipedia).
