I have captured a beaver on trail cameras close to this location and therefore assume the images are further evidence of their presence in the area?

If so, can anyone provide an explanation for the 'smoothness' of the tree base? It seems as though an individual has been grinding teeth?

Thanks

I'd be inclined to consider either a scent-marking substance or fungal growth.
