Bird Feeder Design (1 Viewer)

Over lockdown I started using suet pellets but found that after any rainfall they became a soggy clump. I had a look in my shed and found a few bits off previous home projects and constructed a covered feed hopper which keeps the rain off the pellets and stops droppings falling on to the pellets from birds feeding above. I used a ducting rectangle to round (toolstation code 36325) and an electrical socket back box(34329). Plus an off cut of 100 mm pipe and a plant pot saucer. All shaped using an angle grinder. I fill the hoppers every couple of days and get a good variety of birds feeding from them. It comes apart easy for cleaning. I noticed a rat was feeding from them but sorted this by putting a it of chicken wire over the feed tray.

You had a good start then drifted to the bizarre with the adding to of the man-made objects. Key is to think like a bird and not a human. The just platform was the optimal solution. TIP...don't use wood as it doesn't shed water but absorbs it and or don't choose wood and paint to solve the water absorption issue. There's a house siding product and I'm not referencing the cement one but the board that's constructed using wood products pressed with composites. This product can be found worldwide at any home improvement store. It dries quickly and holds up to all of the issues that plague platform feeders as in the having to constantly sanitizing problem. If you spend enough time with the birds you'll begin to understand better what they see as important not human needs. I'll say this over and over about the importance of the canopy and how the birds use it...it's critical to your birding experience.

From the time each day begins to when it ends it's all about the canopy.
