Brown mallard with white breast? (1 Viewer)

Firstly, I apologize for the poor quality--I have a Motorola--but I was at a suburban pond/lake in California and I stumbled across this peculiar looking duck/mallard. It was a very dark brown with a white patch on its breast.

As I watched it, it interacted with a male Mallard and then they say on the grass together. They were separate from the rest of the group. There weren't any other ducks with the same coloring around.

I figure it is some sort of juvenile/variation of a mallard I just haven't seen before. Thanks in advance!!
