Canada - Nova Scotia - Cape Breton

Hi

I'm very confused about the bird below. We came across it in Cape Breton earlier this week while on vacation on an inland lake about 1km from the sea. Any help would be appreciated! Apologies for the quality of the photographs.

Also it was diving at the edge of the lake.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone - I appreciate your help.

Actually that was my initial thought after pouring over my Sibley and internet images, but I managed to confuse myself... This is a first hooded merganser for me, so I'm pleased. I'd love to see a male adult!
