Canon EF USM L 100-400 Mk1 repair - (1 Viewer)

Way back in 2006-7 is I bought one of these lenses. Took some time out from birding and on inspection this lens had fungus, scrubbed it with IPA and it's better, but soft at the top right of the image, because I had to remove the front element to get at both sides to redce the fungus.

When I look at people on reserves clearly photography has moved on in a big way. Even if it were brand new it would be outclassed. And I am 15 years older, I am not going to carry a 400/f2.8, but I now live in easy pushbike dist of a well known RSPB reserve so I fancy another pop at the low end. Canon tell me my lens is EOL so they won't service it

Experience showed me I was always at the 400 end, are there service options - probably needs front ele replaced and realigned. MPB will sell me a EF400 5.6 prime for a bit over 500 sods, which benchmarks the upper limit of service value at about £250.

Are there third party service options for this sort of thing, or should I just suck up the £500?
