Choke Canyon State Park is about an hour and a half south of San Antonio on IH-37 and is a fine place for birding, particularly when the San Antonio Audobon center at Lake Braunig is dried out, as it mostly is now.

We were there Friday - lots of waders, an osprey eating a fish, some kingfishers, two kestrel, two anhinga, several herons, and innumerable unidentified rafts of ducks, plus many caracara and wild turkey.

It's worth a stop on your way to Corpus Christi and the Gulf of Mexico.
