Lady Mary MacGregor née Mary Jane Cocks (c. 1839-1919) was the second wife of Sir William MacGregor (1846-1919), naturalist, collector and diplomat. She was the daughter of Capitain Cocks, a trader and harbour-master at Suva, Fiji, The Bowerbird is a New Guinean species, which was first described when Sir William MacGregor (q.v.) was govenor of its country of origin. Lady MacGregor also had a locomotive and a rhododendron named after her. (See also Mari (McGregor).

  • Maria Giglioli, 1897 OD Bollettino della Società Geografica Italiana: BSGI / 34 = A. 31 = Ser. 3, Vol. 10. 1897 p. 26 (not seen)
  • syn. Macgregoria pulchra ????
The OD of Maria macgregoria is here. The name was introduced and the bird described in excerpts from a letter that Enrico Giglioli had received from William MacGregor, and that he translated into Italian and published. (Although translated, the text is in double quotes, and there can be no real doubt that MacGregor alone was responsible for its content: the name should in principle be attributed to him, not to Giglioli.)
This is the same bird as the one that was named Macgregoria pulchra.

(Re. Macgregoria pulchra itself: this name is available from a brief note in BBOC here, published on 31 Jan 1897. This is not mentioned in the Key entry for the generic name, which appears to take the name from the April 1897 issue of Ibis here. MacGregor's letter was demonstrably published before the Ibis paper (see editors' note at the end of the latter) but, I think, not before the BBOC note.)
