BEACH CLEAN-UP SULAIBIKHAT (2) - May 11th 2011

16 Volunteers & a collection of around 3oo kg of rubbish went to recycling instead of rotting at the beach. And that was only another small stretch of that area. The beach you see somewhere close to the end is the next one in line waiting for being cleaned, worse than the first two put together. :/

And beach 3 is even worse, you see some of that in the album.

Lots of dead fish, dead crabs, a dead hammer shark and a bird head, 2 oiled Slender billed Gulls and a Curlew with shot wings, nasty algae in the water, some of it bubbling

Enjoy:

PS: I was surprised to still see quite a few birds there

(35) Slender-billed Gulls, (1) Grey Plover, (5) Caspian Tern, (4) Night Heron, (2) Gull billed Tern, (5) House Sparrow, (2 dark & 2 white) Reef Heron, (2) Collared Dove), (12 - 1 immature) Flamingos, (4) Little Tern, (2) Grey Heron), (10) Terek Sandpiper), (7) Kentish Plover, (1) Graceful Prinia, (5) Curlew (1) with shot wing feathers, (1) Black-headed Gull, (4) Cream-coloured Courser, (1) fem. Pied Wheatear

and a few more I yet have to ID (uhm, that YOU yet have to ID :))

The count would have most likely been higher in numbers, but since I was kind of busy collecting rubbish,.....

Another one bites the dust

Welcome to the land where endangered species are killed just for fun.

This one most likely by a sling shot.

I don’t know if we had a breeding pair here, or if this is the bird that has been around for months.

A short video made by K's path about birds in Kuwait, their bird sanctuary and the release of an Egyptian Vulture, shot 9 months ago:

Since my host service screwed something up with my domain,
here you go on G+ for now with the latest island beach clean-up at Qaru island:

Qaru is a small island off the coast of Kuwait, near the Saudi border. The Coast guard is stationed there and birds use it as a resting ground during migration and breeding there during summer.
It is also important for the ongoing turtle conservation program. Any help on IDs of the (mostly dead) animals is welcome!

Bird count of the day: Approx 5 Black-headed Gulls, 1 or 2 possible Caspian or Heuglin's Gulls (one oiled), 1 Ringed Plover, 8 House Sparrows
