the left brown bird is a female boat tailed grackle from what I understand, but the one on the right is slightly smaller and looks a bit different.

Both boat-tailed grackles. I wouldn't be sure there's any significant size difference between those.
Don't quote me, but my guess would be that the bird at left is a 1st-winter male.
It's always better to post the actual photo.
