A helicopter has flown 2,000 heather bales to remote parts of the Marsden Moor estate to help protect the fragile habitat. The spreading of heather brash has become a yearly task at the Marsden estate, near Huddersfield, to control erosion which is exacerbated by grazing and trampling. Last night National Trust property manager David Finnis said: "By spreading the heather brash, we are creating a microclimate which protects peat from the elements and enables the seeds to germinate, thereby helping to diversify the vegetation on the moor and improving the habitats for all the birds and wildlife. "In the last few years we have undertaken revegetation works on some 700 acres of moorland, just over 12 per cent of the land we care for at Marsden, and the results are beginning to show."
