Hello all, I'm Rene from San Antonio, TX...

Seeking guidance on safeguarding a sparrow's nest on our porch from predatory hawks. Witnessing the sparrows' annual growth is a joy, yet last year, a hawk preyed on the fledglings. I'd welcome any humane protection strategies for the nest. Your ideas and suggestions are much appreciated.

Welcome to Birdforum.

I’m not sure there is anything you can do, as any interference could cause the nest to be abandoned.

Hi Rene and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

Tricky one to do with out disturbing them, I'm afraid. However, if you can wait until both the adults are off the nest and are all pre-prepared, I suggest getting some chicken wire (big enough mesh for the sparrows, but not the hawk obviously), plus a few small cuphooks.

First time they leave the nest to get some food, put the hooks in the roof (that's if they will go, but it looks like you should be able to do that. Then when they go again, quickly unroll the required length of the chicken wire and hook it on. Then cross your fingers. The birds shouldn't be worried by the wire, as long as it's not right on top of the nest of course. Afraid this solution may not look very chic, but it's only for about 2-3 weeks.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.
