We still have a few openings left for our annual Hummingbird Banding Expeditions to Costa Rica for February 2009.
On past trips we've been very successful at finding and banding Ruby-throated Hummingbirds on their wintering grounds in Guanacaste Province, near the southernmost edge of the species' wintering range. There is essentially no other systematic work being done on "our" North American ruby-throats in the Neotropics, so every trip is bound to turn up something new and interesting. (For example, you may have heard that one of the RTHU banded in January 2008 on our Costa Rican study site was encountered five months later in Baxley Ga--the first time anyone in the U.S. has ever found a winter-banded hummingbird from Central America!)
If you're interested in participating, please see the information at http://www.hiltonpond.org/CostaRicaAnnounceMain09.html and register soon. There are links from that page to accounts (with extensive photos) of all our previous trips.
You need not be a trained scientist to be able to help. Part participants have included teachers, naturalists, backyard birders, and folks just interested in hummingbirds. All these "citizen scientists" were integral parts of "Operation RubyThroat: The Hummingbird Project" and helped assure the success of the excursions.
Happy Hummingbird Watching!
