The Birds of Prey Working Group of EWT in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust in England are organising the first International Vulture Awareness Day. Organisations in Africa, Europe, the Americas and South-Asia are celebrating this day with a variety of events worldwide.
The National Vulture Awareness Day was initiated in South Africa in 2006 and aimed to create greater awareness of the plight of vultures among the general public. Now the Birds of Prey Working Group in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust in England are working together and expanding the initiative into an international event.
A coordinated international day will publicise the conservation of vultures to a much wider audience and highlight the important work being carried out by the world’s vulture conservationists. On September 5th 2009, the aim is for each participating organisation to carry out their own activities that highlight vulture conservation and awareness.
The Hawk Conservancy Trust has constructed a web-page where participating organisations can register and provide information on their participation in this event. The website provides a central place for all participants to outline these activities and see the extent of vulture conservation across the world.
A virtual event called Blog for Vultures has been launched for individuals to show their support of IVAD09. You are most welcome to join and write about, film, draw or photograph Old or New World vultures. The IVAD09 blog festival will start on September 4 at 19:00 UTC/GMT/Zulu time.
A Facebook Event has also been created where people can show their individual support for IVAD09.
We hope you and your local conservation organisation will support this initiative. :t:
