Mostly Mammals
I am visiting Lake Hornborga for Cranes in April, can anyone advise on other birding sites plus any areas to see elk, beavers or other mammals

Thanks

Mark

"Hornborgasjön" itself is a good place for all sorts of birds. I suppose you have visited the official site Hornborgasjön. The "Naturum" on the east side is a good place for various birds.

Beaver can be found in the lake also. Elk or moose (älg in Swedish) is not so common around the lake nowadays but if you have a car you can take trips around the countryside, preferably at dusk or dawn. Look closely at the edge of fields, you might get lucky!

Other places for birding depends on how far you are willing to travel.

We have a car and will travel 1-2 hours for good birds and elk

Thanks

In that case you should concentrate on the inland since the coasts are a bit too far.

There are good places on the east shore of lake Vänern. You could also visit the island Visingsö in lake Vättern, in the north there are nice areas.

March is early for birding in Sweden so there can still be snow and ice in many areas.

For bird sightings and more visit "Todays Birds".

For your information Mark, the winter here in Sweden is very severe this year and the snow in the region is deeper than usual. If you have planned your trip for early April it could be a problem. Check for snowdepths via this link: Snödjup
