Mystery wader, central California coast (1 Viewer)

Seen November 28, high tide, inland bay near sandy shore, in company of marbled godwits, whimbrels, western and least sandpipers.
Looks like a western sandpiper with a very long neck. Shape of a red phalarope without the black eye line of winter plumage. I can find not picture of a phalarope with this colouring.
It had the typical delicate features of a phalarope, but no typical feeding behaviour.
All help appreciated.
