Yesterday (Sat 21st Jan) with a blue sky and bright sunshine over our SW Sheffield home we were tempted to go for a drive into Derbyshire to watch out for winter bird flocks of maybe Lapwings, Crows, Redwings, and Fieldfares and while we saw none of these it was the most fascinating drive. Where the sun had not shone there was not only snow and frost on the ground, but entire trees from ground-level to the tips of the top twigs covered in a coating of frost. They looked like trees taken out of a Scandinavian fairy tale. Patches of fog in the dales added to the scene and some of the tiny back roads had substantial patches of ice which added drama to the drive.
We have never seen conditions like this in all of our lives. According to our car's temperature read-out the external temperature varied from minus 2C to plus 1.5C.
