Spent Lead Shot kills 400 UK wildfowl every day. (1 Viewer)

Lead is poisonous to human beings and to wildlife. Following the agonising Deaths of Mute Swans it was banned from use in fishing weights many years ago.
Despite that, it is still legal to use it in ammunition for shotguns etc so it can easily contaminate the game shot with it (with potential danger to human health) and spent shot picked up by birds feeding in wetland areas where shooting has taken place, causes the deaths of hundreds of ducks and other wetland species every day. There is, however, a perfectly acceptable non-toxic alternative which is used in many countries where lead shot has been banned already. An e-petition to request the uk government to ban the use of lead in ammunition was started some time ago by rob sheldon. It has the backing of the RSPB and WWT yet it has only just reached 10,000 signatures whereas a rival shooters petition to retain lead shot has many more signatures. Please consider signing the `ban lead` petition.

Just enter `ban toxic lead ammunition- petitions` in your browser and the
link https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/111533 should appear.
You only have to confirm your email address and the job is done. Its well worth makeing the effort for such a good cause.

Pretty sure I signed something like this a while ago....

What's sad is that so many people care so little for the on-going affect of their pastime has on the very types of birds they wish to shoot. Utterly brainless.

Yes I utterly agree with that and people who wish to partake the use of a shotgun For this sport that knowingly use these cartridges and what Damage the spoil from them cause,s to their presumed loved wildlife Includeing our health leaves a nasty taste in my mouth (Pardon the Pun)

A good Short Paper from Ian Newton in the latest copy of BB - page 172-179 on the subject.

"Problems created by the continuing use of lead ammunition in game hunting."

We probably don't need to guess the conclusion because this has been well published elsewhere but when will British people educate themselves to the effect they are having on their environment? Surely legislation is required to ban use of lead.

Its use has, of course, been banned from wetlands for some time, but the evidence suggests the ban is widely ignored by selfish wildfowlers. The only way to remedy this situation is to ban it outright.
