One of East Anglia's most scenic stretches of coast is at risk of pollution, after a mile-long oil slick was spotted in the North Sea. Council officials were keeping watch to see what environmental impact the oil will have on beaches and wildlife in one of the region's most popular tourist areas. The alarm was raised yesterday, when the RSPA received dozens of calls from the public, alarmed by the sight of seabirds floundering in oil along the coast from Yarmouth to Essex. Thames Coastguard, which was put on alert, sent up a plane to check the problem, and spotted a slick about a mile long and 100m wide floating five to six miles off Southwold, on Suffolk's Heritage Coast.
