New bird species migrate to Malta
by Natalino Fenech

Two new species of birds need to be added to the list visiting Malta.

One of them is a Siberian rubythroat which was caught and ringed at Rabat by Mark Gauci and Manwel Mallia on Sunday.

The bird, the size of a robin, was a first year female.

Another new species is the Whites thrush, which is also a visitor from distant Siberia. A bird of this species was shot at Bahar ic-Caghaq on October 10 last year and according to sources, another two were taken in the first week of November from Mizieb.

Other rare birds seen or ringed recently were a Dusky warbler ringed at Xemxija, which is the fourth recorded for Malta, and four yellow browed warblers, three from Ghadira and one from is-Simar reserve at Xemxija.

A male Goldeneye, a very rare duck of which there are only four records, was shot at Salina recently. It is not yet certain whether the bird was a wild one that travelled to meet its fate in Malta or whether it had escaped from some private collection.

There's a pic of the the Siberian rubythroat before it was ringed and released. (Att.) Photo credit: Charles Gauci.

Comment:

Sad. The large numbers of raptors and passerines shot annually hit the headlines - and quite right too. But often such tragedies as this go unnoticed.

From 1 May 2004 Malta will be in the EU and each and every EU citizen (or resident)
may lodge a complaint with the Commission against a Member State about any measure (law, regulation or administrative action) or practice which they consider incompatible with a provision or a principle of Community law.
I've done some work on drawing some information together on "Contacting EU Institutions"

Do your homework now in time for May.

A Proact campaign will be launched on this basis after Malta's accession. As no doubt the shooting will go on during the spring migration (sadly), we are cooperating with BirdLife Malta to document this as background material for our case against Malta's weak and inneffective application of its existing legislation.
