RSPB pledge against illegal killing of Birds of Prey (1 Viewer)

Hi cartman, all signed up. I am a RSPB member & just received my update magazine from them. Its appalling that this Is still happening. I would be Interested to see how many sign the pledge. Its got to stop & when they catch these people they send them to prison & fine them heavily & If Its happening on private estates, they should fine the estate heavily as well... Thanks for remiding me about the pledge..

Regards.
Sean.

Hi Sean,

I got my mag yesterday which promted this thread, it is a disgrace that is still goes on.

Read the investagation blog on this link, it talks about a gamekeeper who was involved in deaths of 102 buzzards, 40 ravens and 37 badgers. He was sentenced to a six-month suspended jail term, 150 hours community work and ordered to pay £200 costs.

I read a bit of that, really he should have got jail time, at least 5 years & because he's a gamekeeper the estate should have sacked him & banned him from doing anymore gamekeeping work & took his guns off him & banned him from having anymore. That would be punishment & It would be deserved. That poor Peregrine with Its leg trapped would have had an agonising death & for what. I feel very strongly about this, because I used to know a gamekeeper & I dont If he did what others do, but they always say that birds of prey keep killing all the pheasants, partridge etc which Is doing him out of money with the shooting seasons, now we all know that more reared gamebirds are killed by road than all the birds of prey put together.. Sorry for going on, It just gets me going..... What exactly happens when the pledge Is done, does It go to someone who looks at all the peole who have signed It & acts on It?

Sean..

Great post, I wish more could be done but what?

All very good. But ... the RSPB is an enormous charity/conservation organisation/member organisation that, as such, should have ENORMOUS clout. Does it truly deliver? Or is it increasingly affected by its status as a vast landowner in its own right struggling to maintain its moral position within a wider context of the politics of landownership on such a scale, whilst feeding its membership such snippets in a conscious, not to say cynical, attempt at placating them, whilst proving supine, not to say complicit, in such atrocities as the destruction of habitat currently being undertaken at Marshside? This latter is on land which, whilst not managed or owned by the RSPB, is effectively surrounded by one of their premier regional reserves and which impacts significantly upon the reserve, and which appears at first glance to have been "traded" for other local interest and influence, to the detriment of birds and, most definitely, to local birders. The silent and complicit ineffectiveness of the RSPB and the lack of consultation and engagement with local members/reserve regulars, and sense of absence of all responsibility in this matter has been thoroughly demoralising to a number of its most ardent members and supporters. Hic.

I would like to add, that they should also close these hunting estates down. If they can't manage these places in a lawful and environmentally friendly fashion, then they should have their licenses withdrawn for 6 months.

This should give them enough time to change their way of thinking. The tone of every estate filters down from the top. The gamekeeper may be the one that gets prosecuted and fined, but he is only doing what the owner of the estate is telling him to do.

Like I said, hit them where it hurts - In the pocket, and you will solve 80% of the wildlife crime on these estates immediately.

I have also signed the RSPB petition:
