Hi
We will be flying into Kuala Lumpur in December and have about a week to go birding. Does anyone have any suggestions on suitable sites at this time of the year. We would be prepared to travel to Borneo etc.
Many thanks
Tony

Hi
Thanks for that. We are actually trying to find out if it will be too wet - or at least where the 'least wet' places are.

Hi Tony,

You will be arriving in the midst of the monsoon season. You can expect heavy rain almost every day. Flooding is quite common, and conditions in the forests will be muddy at best. The monsoon affects most of the region, including Singapore, where I live.

The exception is western Thailand (Phang Na, Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak etc.), where it will be the dry season. If you go there instead, you can look for Gurney's Pitta in Krabi, visit Khao Sok National Park and so. Read Nick Upton's site, http://www.thaibirding.com/locations/south/s_thailand.htm

If you decide to stick to your plan, you should subscribe to the Malaysian Nature Society Selangor (KL area) Branch e-group, and get more info from the members there. Malaysians are a very helpful and friendly bunch. They can advise you on the best places to go at that time of the year, which of course is the midst of the migration season

Hope this helps,

Mick

Thanks for that. It is as we expected with heavy rain and, I would imagine, heavy leeches! I like the Gurney's idea!
