big insect (1 Viewer)

Looks like some sort of Hoverfly by the striped abdomen. The photo is poor so a final ID is not possible. Shame though.

André, can you give any more information about what it looked like. I suggest that from the Circium flower its on, that it is somewhere between July-August?

Could be a large solitary wasp species (none social species) judging by the dark wings?
 
Hi Jörn, trying to find a suitable Scoliid image from Europe on the internet is almost impossible. The following species looks like it will come from that area, Scolia erythrocephala. Do you think it might be that one?
 
I think with 2 inches long; it is Scolia flavifrons; an Ectoparasitoid of the Rhinoceros beetle Oryctes nasicornis (larval development ectoparasitic on the beetles larva), adults are flower visitors
