I'm going to Port Nourlunga near Adelaide in November 2011, does anyone have any website information or site guide recommendations for this area.

Cheers

I guess you've already looked at www.birdsaustralia.com.au and
www.sabirding.com?

There are a good number of Oz bird books, but best to get them there - google that subject and you should come up with at least 5! Doubtless many others will respond and tell you which is best.

Oz camp sites are properly organised and most have chalets if you're not renting a campervan The Australian Automobile Association has a camp site guide, as do several other organisations. It's usually worth while asking while in Adelaide on where you can get these brochures or the bird books. I'll be somewhere in Oz at that time, but I'm just going walkabout and with no particular schedule for several months!

Thanks MJB,

I'm going over to visit family so luckily I have accomodation, my brother has kindly got me a cracking bird book for Xmas, Helm 'Birds of Australia', which I'm already looking at, and thanks for the websites which I will look into, but was basically looking for something based just around the Adelaide area rather than the whole of Aus.

Thanks again for the info, and good luck with your trip.

Have a great time. I expect there's a website about birding Adelaide. There used to be a city bird club; one of their members was our coach driver on our Adelaide excursion when we did the Indian Pacific Sydney-Perth railway journey in 2001!

Have a look at http://www.birdobservers.org.au/Bir...ent=BOCALive&usemap=on&first=on&sid=960780516

Manually zoom the map to the area you're visiting, and click on one of the markers. It should show you some details about that site, including links to other websites with information about it. A bit clunky and hard to understand, but has lots of information in it.

You could also try joining the birding-aus mailing list and simply asking. Some locals should have lots of suggestions.

As MJB said, www.sabirding.com is a useful resource.

I had a couple of days two days for birding following a conference back in '07 and drove up to Gluepot Reserve. It is about 2.5 hours drive to Waikerie where I stayed overnight and was met by Peter Waanders (who runs the www.sabirding.com site above) at dawn and we went out to Gluepot Reserve (another 30-40 mins drive). Great spot for some hard to see Mallee species (the specialty birds here are Black-eared Miner, Red-lored Whistler, White-browed Treecreeper, Striated Grasswren, Shy Heathren and Southern Scrub-robin). After leaving Peter around 1pm I drove along the Murray a bit to a site for Regent Parrot, and then back to Adelaide.

The next morning I spent a couple of hours in the Botanic Gardens where the highlight was a skulking Bassian Thrush (other good birds were Superb Fairywren, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Adelaide Rosella, Eastern Spinebill). In general this was good place for various honeyeaters, and November will see lots of wildflowers in bloom.

Another good birding place within reach of Adelaide is Kangaroo Island, though not for a day trip.

Cheers, Ian

Thank you all for your info and advice, it will all come in handy, also looking at hiring a guide for a few days for a few of the specialist birds.

Cheers, role on Nov

Hi Chris
The southern Fleurieu Peninsula is right on your doorstep at Port Noarlunga.A good day trip is a drive to Victor Harbor,Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island.Plenty of water birds, birds of prey, parrots, cockatoos, penguins at Granite Island and dolphins and seals.

Cheers
