Possible bat calling? Normandy, France (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Sorry for the lack of attachment but I didn't have any form of recording device on me.

I heard this peculiar animal just below my window in my cottage in the Normandy countryside about a week ago. I heard it first at night, around 11pm-1am, and then again in the middle of the day. My parents think it is probably a bat, but I want to check here.
It sounded like this:

A very short sound, maybe about a second or so, very much like a kazoo, or like someone blowing down a blade of grass - that slightly wheezy sound which starts high-pitched and then goes down gradually.
Had an almost bickering quality to it, which makes me think that there were a couple of animals in there.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks, Paul

Paul,

I've only just spotted this post and see nobody has replied to you. I can't help you with what it might have been although I think it is unlikely that it was a bat. Bats do make sounds that are audible without specialist equipment but no bat I know of makes a sound anything like you describe. I could, however, just not have met one yet.

Thanks for the reply! I posted this also in the mammal section and got the answer that it might be an edible dormouse. I'll try to record it if I hear it again.
