amongst other places, it would be incredible to see such a huge bird in such a populated area

It was spotted at Haweswater, the home of Cumbria’s last remaining golden eagle.

The two huge creatures were seen to clash, with the young sea eagle eventually chased off by the resident golden eagle. It comes just over a year since another white-tailed eagle was photographed at Bowness-on-Solway – the first sighting in Cumbria in more than 200 years.

It follows a major reintroduction programme in Scotland, which has seen the bird gradually extending its breeding grounds. The latest sighting was believed to have been a 2008 bird, who has been sighted at various locations across Northumberland and Yorkshire in recent weeks, covering huge distances at a time.

Prior to arriving at Haweswater the eagle had been spotted near Newcastle Airport. It travelled south to Flamburgh Head then the Humber, across to York then Leighton Moss before being tracked to Cumbria. It then fled to the North East.
