Anyone thinking of visiting the RSPB reserve at Aylesbeare Common be aware that over 8 acres of heathland here and at nearby Hawkerland were destroyed by fire yesterday.

This was devastating as it is obviously the nesting season and bad news for the resident Dartford Warblers particularly after another bad winter.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.|:(|

That is terrible news. Such an important site in the local context as well and Nationally.

It is really bad news, it is a lovely place & I love going there for the peace and quiet. Such a shame especially after other fires in Ireland, Northern England & Scotland in recent weeks.

Happened to be on the bus with RSPB SW employee today and according to local reports its not a massive area which has been affected. Which perhaps is thanks to the 12 fire tenders which turned up, along with RSPB and Estate staff too. A great effort if this has managed to contain the disaster.
