Came across this very interesting article in a copy of our local paper. There have already been several threads re this subject but thought I would post this anyway as there are lots of very interesting collective names.
The article was written by Jenny Holden, who is the conservation officer for the World Owl Trust(and incidentally a BF member) and contributes a weekly item re birds and wildlife.(I do have her permission to quote her sayings.)I found them fascinating.

Dissimulation of Blackcaps
Sagaciousness of Owls.
Drift of Snow Buntings
Circus of Puffins
Abattoir of Shrikes
Puddling of Mallard
Romantic Ballet of Swans
Community of Coots
Gulp of Cormorants
Mischief of Magpies
Murder/Caucus of Crows
Academy of Sparrowhawks
Ladle of Dippers
Salon of Curlew
Kettle of Buzzards
Parliament of long-eared Owls.
Does anyone know of any more collective terms for groups of birds and their origin.
