I am travelling with 2 Japanese friends initially to see the aurora but also for birdwatching. We have the first 2 weeks of September. So we are planning to fly to Tromso which seems to be far enough north for a good aurora, and to hire a car.
I have Gustav Aulen's book on Where to watch birds in Scandinavia. So perhaps driving to Balsfjord, Valdak, Stabbursdalen, Tanamunningen, Nesseby, Store EkkerØy, HornØy, Syltefjordstauran, Munkefjord and Øvre Pasvik would be good for looking for northerly birds.
But the book says that for the north most breeding birds will have left by September. It was published in 1996. Is that still true? Should we soon head south and aim for Falsterbo? And if so should we aim to head for the Gulf of Bothnia and then down the coast? Would it be too early for Oland?
We don't have target birds (other than Snowy owl and we know we won't see that). But 3toed woodpecker, Gyr Falcon, Pine Grosbeak and many of the owls would be new for me.
