Weaver nests as death traps (1 Viewer)

Ornithological Observations, an ejournal, has just published a paper reviewing incidents of birds (and a chameleon) becoming trapped in a weaver nests --- the link to the pdf for the paper is at http://oo.adu.org.za/content.php?id=38

Following a trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in 2010 we noted that an indirect cause of probable death occurred with relative frequency when the accummulated weight of large Sociable Weaver nests caused the failure of large supporting branches, particularly in A. erioloba, resulting in nest and supporting branches crashing to the ground. There may have been collateral damage from the destruction of nests of other species in the fall, as well as the loss of nest sites etc which would have been used by a variety of hole-nesting creatures.

Best wishes,
Dave Kennedy
