Buenos dias amigo,
I was there last May during two weeks , but i must admit that i spent my time visiting the beautiful middle-age churchs in the countryside ( Orcival , Brioude , issoire , le puy ,Saint nectaire ) as well as the medieval castles ' Tournoel , Murol , Anjony ) . There are so many things to see that unfortunetaly my scope remained inside the car .
But , if you want to meet ringers and birders , IMHO you could contact the local LPO ( member of Birdlife International ) they should be able to help you:
http://www.lpo-auvergne.org/
Adress :2 bis rue du Clos Perret
63100 Clermont-ferrand
Phone Number :04 73 36 39 79
They have a webpage where serious birders write there observations :
http://www.faune-auvergne.org/
If you stay some times in Clermond-Ferrand , i would recommend you to make a trip southern ( i think about 2Hrs and half cardrive ) to the Jontes Canyon , Tarn canyon and the Causses Mejean to see the Vultures
http://vautours-lozere.com/
On the causses Mejean , you can see the Przewalsky horses ( ok they are nor birds ..but)

The National Nature Parc of the Cevennes , is a place you should consider to visit for birding .195 species of bird (of which 135 breed there) . 2H30 drive from Clermont Ferrand.

The Parc includes the Causse Mejean and is labelled Unesco world heritage
Places to bird around Clermont-Ferrand :
Val d'Allier
Saint Saturnin
Chaine des Domes
Vallée de Chaudefour : a nice Natural reserve where you can also see Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) and Mouflon (ovis aries )
Truyeres canyon
Prat de Bouc
Rocher de Prades
But i recommend you to use and share your birding on the website Faune-auvergne
You can see which species has been seen e.g the last 5 days around Clermont-Ferrand ( 63)
http://www.faune-auvergne.org/index.php
click on left "les observations / 5 derniers jours ) then click 63 on top ( Clermont ferrand county )
You can look also on the Species presence map
http://www.faune-auvergne.org/index.php?m_id=620
by clicking on the spot you would like to prospect and then clicking on "presence nombre d'espèces " , you get a pop up with the list of the species of birds seen in the aera ( maille)
If you want to see a specie e.g Montagus Harrier . Choose it in the list ( Top window between at left of AFFICHEZ box ) The click "Affichez "
You can get the map of the places where this species has been watched (carte espèce ) and the best period to watch it ( quand la voir )
If this can help
Good luck and have a nice stay in Clermont-Ferrand
