Great Grey Owl / Vole forecast (1 Viewer)

Dear all,

I am considering a trip to Finland to look for Great Grey Owl (and other owl species), probably using Finnature. Are there any forecasts as to whether 2017 will be a good vole year in the Oulu/Kuusamo areas, and hence a good year for owls - especially GGO, or am I better off waiting for another year?

Thanks, Paul

I'm not sure they can predict this far in advance. However, a bad winter usually brings a number of owls closer to the towns. There are generally (GG and other) a few around Helsinki over winter...

I'm suree if the situation arises that there is a guide who can take you out and about.

Over time I have seen all the owls in the south of Finland (not Snowy) ie not much further north than Tampere. A cheaop flight to Tampere and hook up with some locals should nail them...

Thank you for responding, I should have been clearer, I was thinking of a spring (May) trip. I have seen in a couple of places that vole years can be predicted up to a year in advance - but no actual predictions!
