Entered the attached picture in a competition and was dissapointed to have it rejected on the grounds of poor composition.
Does everyone think this is fair criticism?
It's an Antarctic Skua with a Chinstrap Penguin egg.

could only guess that it would have been better in portrait format so the wing tips aren't cut off (maybe zoomed in too much). Personaly I like it. good shot.
 
Rhys is right about the portrait format. That would have been better and not being able to see all the wing does spoil it. Also your bird is placed almost centrally in the photo. Placing a bird centrally does not always allow the eye to travel around the rest of the photo and really here as the bird was stealing an egg it needed to tell a story of sorts. I think the bird should have been placed much more to the left with more of its environment being seen to the last third on the right. So yes compositionally it could have been better but its still a great photo. Better luck next time ;)
