Hi Andrew

I think your fungi looks very similar to the one in the 'Fungi ID please' thread posted on this forum by Trevor Lee. Which is velvet shank. However as you may see from this forum I am just starting to learn like yourself so I wouldn't want to say for definate.

Yes, Hattyview is right.

Velvet Shank, Flammulina velutipes.
As I said in the other thread, it is a classic winter fungus. The lower part of the stem is velvety, and towards the base it is dark brown (hidden by other stems on the photograph). Great photograph!
