Langkawi Malaysia Info needed (1 Viewer)

Russkie...saw that this had not got any replies, then realised you had put it in the wrong threads...So it has now been moved to the correct one by Admin (Thanks).

Just to bump this up for anyone who might have info as it would not show up otherwise.

Hopefully Dr Manjeet or James Eaton might be able to help on this.

Hi Nigel,

Unfortunately I haven't visited Langkawi yet, though I will be visiting the island during early January, e-mail or PM me after 6th Janaury and I can pass on any worthwhile details on the birding I did.

Worth going through the following link, might have some reports from Langkawi:

http://www.travellingbirder.com/tri...m=1&to=12&author=&remember_la=on&uk=on&page=1

Below are links to two trip reports from the island.

Langkawi supports good populations of Great and Wreathed Hornbill, along with being the only site in Malaysia for Brown-winged Kingfisher, a mangrove specialist. Might be worth checking out the Malaysian Nature Society website too.

Cheers,

James

Hello,

I bin there 1996, but not for birdwatching.
Remember rice fields with asian cows. On cows sit different birds.
On cables also, e.g. kingfishers.

There is also high speed ferry to Penang ( still some rainforest. e.g. 20 km west of Georgetown ) and to mainland ( Alor Setar ).
From the bus from Georgetown to Alor Setar, I saw many birds.
But it was November, this is raintime.

Best regards
Dieter

I am in Penang Island near mainland Malaysia. Langkawi Island is about 70 nautical miles from Penang. If you have stays in Penang I'd be glad to show you a birding spot or two.
You may not want to miss Eagle Feeding when in Langkawi.

Nigel,

I don't know whether you have already gone but if you still want info I will post again with all the details of my visit in March 2006. I absolutely love Langkawi and this was a second trip. I was lucky to stay in really good hotels both the Datai and Andaman which were great because of the location in a forested area. The Datai has a naturist who comes on selected days in the morning and evening and takes people for free walking trips around the hotels forested area. The evening trip we went on was fantastic and we saw colugas and flying squirrels. The morning trips are dedicated to birding and fauna and flora although more of the latter really. The guide is excellent (can't remember his name) and he may be prepared to do private tours. He and a mate do a mangrove swamp tour. They are quite rightly anti feeding the eagles done by the commerical tours but having said that it was amazing see the eagles so close on the mangrove tour - worthwhile if you have never done a mangrove tour.

I am really a novice birder and my secret to seeing some amazing birds without doing serious birding (my husband's patience is limited even though he has become much more interested due to me!) is that I am also a golfer! During all my trips around the world the best birds I have seen have been on the golf course and the main golf course near the Datai is no exception. Unfortunately, you are not supposed to walk around if you are not playing golf!

SO, if you are interested I can get my old birding list out and give you an idea of what I saw.

Hope you have the great time I always do there. Each time we have had spectacular weather and you will be going at about the same time!
