Hi.....

I was in Western Australia some time ago and whilst birding, I found amongst a flock of Gallah's........ A Major Mitchell Cockatoo. Speaking to Australian Birders a few days after (I never had my camera with me) they said that it was most unlikely that it was a MMC.

Can someone identify it....... as I am sure it is.... ????

Regards....

Yes, it's a Major Mitchell all right. Could be wild, could be escapee, depending on where you saw it.

The Major Mitchell is named after the explorer (of the same name :) ), who said it was the most beautiful bird he had ever seen...I've always been inclined to agree. Lucky you for seeing one - they are fairly rare!

Kalbarri is definately on the edge of their range, but Forshaw still lists it as within range, so i think it is most likely that it was a wild bird.
