hi, i'm off to amritsar and himachel pradesh at the end of october for a couple of months and would be grateful for any good sites in this area or any birding groups that i may contact. Also does anyone have any info on hiring a car up there, with or without a driver?, many thanks

Do not hire a car without a driver. Even if you get one - which is going to be difficult - driving around in Indian highways and cities is *not* something that you will be prepared for.

Dont know of any birding in Amristar - you could head out to the countryside and take a walk, I suppose.

Himachal has a lot of birding opportunities, but most involve hiking. Around Manali, try the park in the town itself, and also taking a walk up the road from Naggar Castle, about 10km away. You can also visit Solang Valley and hike alongside the river. A jeep ride up to Rohtang Pass will turn up lammergeiers, himalayan griffons and maybe an eagle or two, as well.
