2/8/09 - Kipuka Ki, Kipuka Puaulu & Pu'u Maka'ala NAR (1 Viewer)

Another day wasted by highly unstable weather. It was raining all the way up to Volcano this morning, so for a second time I had to abandon my plan of scouting Wednesday's bird survey transect near Kulani. On the leeward side of Kilauea I found that the weather was only an occasional misting in Kipuka Ki in the volcano park, and decided to check on native plants there. I wandered from Kipuka Ki down to Kipuka Puaulu. As noon approached occasional rumbles of thunder came from the far side of Mauna Loa. When I finally decided to call it an early day I stopped by the Pu'u Maka'ala NAR trailhead to post a note about my lost lens cap, but unexpectedly found that the rain had stopped. I went not quite a kilometer up the trail, looking at birds, bugs and plants, and hoping to find my lens cap at the lower end. However, it was too late to make a real outing of it, and not worth getting my boots soaked and muddy or risking another thunderstorm, so I reluctantly decided to head back to town after a couple hours. The storms seem to have chased most of the birds elsewhere, so I didn't have much opportunity to practice counts for next week.

Today's theme seems to be pink...
