2/28/09 - Powerline Road

Posted Sunday 1st March 2009 at 02:39 by bkrownd
The forecast was promising, but the forecast 0% chance of rain and cloud turned out to actually be 80% fog and blowing drizzle. Occasionally even full-blown rain. Yeah thank you, NOAA. I managed to do the first three miles of Powerline Road before deciding the weather was too unpredictable to stay out. It was a very disappointing outing of less than 3 hours, but some days I don't get out there at all. Unfortunately it was not any better at lower elevations and I returned to Hilo early in the afternoon.

The birds were taking shelter from the wind, and not quite as talkative as usual. I thought I finished counting at one location, but as I passed the next tree that was emitting only the mutterings of a couple white-eyes...a dozen birds of four species suddenly erupted from its interior. I had to guess which of the little blurs was what species.

I saw one lone and silent 'akiapola'au at the 2.5 mile kipuka. It was interesting to watch an 'amakihi that was following it around closely, seeming to imitate it. An 'io also flew over that kipuka, which brought out some unusual sounds from the birds. Otherwise all the usual suspects were found in the usual places and the usual numbers.
