Colin's Bird Diary - 8th November 2007 (1 Viewer)

An afternoon at Ashleworth Ham Nature Reserve on a day of sunshine, some cloudy periods and occasional very heavy blustery showers. The latter brought down many of the beautifully coloured leaves which were still on the trees. It was 'snowing' leaves all across the reserve at one point.

I was searching through the Snipe looking for an odd coloured individual that I had seen two days ago. This one had the dimensions of a Common Snipe but was much darker and its central crown stripe was almost non existant at the front of the crown but was the usual width for a few millimetres near the top of the head. The flanks were heavily barred and the pale face markings were not sharp and were predominantly pale. This was probably just an aberrant Snipe to go with the probable leucistic Starling noted a few days ago as well.

13 Snipe were scrutenised and finally the Great Grey Shrike was noted from the hide this time for its 23rd day. At least one of the Water Pipits were still present and the resident Peregrine perched on a near tree instead of the electricity pylon for a change.
