On Hearing Goldfinches (1 Viewer)

The goldfinches in small flocks they twitter and sing
And the fancy in me it somehow takes to wing
And I find myself back in the field by the hill
On a bright Summer's day by the clear mountain rill.

That to the big river babbles as it does flow
And goldfinches are singing on the hedgerow
And the cuckoo is calling in the wood nearby
And the swallows above me they chirp as they fly.

At the foot of the hill overlooking the town
On a soft patch of bracken I lay me self down
The skylark a small speck in the naked eye
Above me is carolling in the blue sky.

On the barbed wire fence by the western highway
The goldfinches sing on a bright Winter's day
Their distinctive notes so familiar and clear
Took me to a place that is far north of here.
